TOP TEN TIPS

  • When taking out a mortgage in France, decide what your long-term project is
  • Decide whether you just need a mortgage or other banking services too (bank account, credit card, savings account, local branch or online service, etc). this will determine the choice of bank.
  • Start the mortgage process well in advance so that a loan application can be sent in as soon as you have signed the preliminary agreement (Compromis de Vente)
  • Insurance to cover the mortgage is compulsory in France. If you have a medical condition, make this clear from the start so the correct choice of bank/insurance company can be made
  • Send back the necessary paperwork promptly – a speedy application depends partly on your ability to provide the necessary documents in good time
  • Read the final loan offer carefully and ask for a translation if this isn’t provided. A mortgage can last for 20/30 years!
  • No crossings out or changes will be accepted on the medical questionnaire or the final offer, so filling this in correctly is vital to avoid delays.
  • Personal financing : decide how you will transfer this sum to the Notaire, and make arrangements well ahead of the signature date
  • Likewise, decide how you will service the monthly mortgage account (via monthly transfers, periodical lump sums etc). A permanent transfer avoids missed payments and bank charges.
  • The Notaire will send you the title deeds as soon as these are returned from the mortgage registration office. Check when this is likely to be (often around six months after signature).
